Sexual Predators and Dating Apps: Learn The Dangers

How To Keep Yourself Safe When Using Dating Apps

As the number of dating app users continues to rise, so does the opportunity for sexual predators to find their victims. Here’s what you need to know to say safe when online dating.

Common Warning Signs to Watch Out After Matching With a Prospective Date

Knowing how perpetrators operate can help you recognize these red flags:

  • Asking personal questions too soon.
  • Wanting to meet in person immediately.
  • Having few or no friends on their profile.
  • Refusing to video chat

Singles can stay safe by:

  • Meeting in public places for the first time.
  • Telling a friend or family member where they are going and who they are meeting.
  • Being aware of their surroundings and who is around them.
  • Asking questions and getting to know the person before meeting in person.

Do Dating Apps Screen for Sexual Predators?

Sadly, the answer is no. While most dating apps have terms of service prohibiting convicted sex offenders from using their platform, there is no guarantee that these individuals or others who intend to sexually assault, will be screened out. According to a questionnaire that ProPublica used to learn about sexual assault and dating apps, out of 244 respondents who use dating apps, 188 said that they had experienced harassment or assault after using a dating app or being matched with a sex offender. 71 people said they reported a sexual assault to the platform. 34 said the platform never responded to their reports of sexual assault.

This means it's up to users to be aware of the risks and to take precautions when meeting someone for the first time.
