Sexual Violence Statistics in Transgender and Non-Binary Communities

Whey Sexual Assault is So Prevalent in Transgender and Non-Binary Communities

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), one in two transgender women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime. This statistic is alarming and underscores the need for greater awareness and support for transgender and non-binary people who have experienced sexual violence.

There are many reasons why transgender and non-binary people may be at greater risk for sexual violence. For example, they may be more likely to experience discrimination, poverty, and homelessness, which can make them more vulnerable to violence. Additionally, transgender and non-binary people may not have access to adequate healthcare and support services, which can make it difficult for them to report violence and get the help they need.

The Concerning Statistics

When it comes to sexual assault and abuse, transgender people are disproportionately affected. In a survey of more than 27,000 transgender people, it was found that nearly half of all respondents had experienced sexual assault at some point in their lives. This is in stark contrast to the general population, where one in five women and one in 71 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. The NSVRC reports the following statistics related to sexual violence in the transgender/non-binary communities:

  • 47% of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives.
  • 78% of trans or non-binary people have experienced sexual harassment at some point in their lives.
  • 35% of trans or non-binary people have experienced physical assault at some point in their lives.
  • 12% of trans or non-binary people have experienced sexual violence at some point in their lives.
  • 57% of trans and non-binary people said they feel uncomfortable asking the police for help.
  • 58% of trans and non-binary people who interacted with law enforcement said they experienced mistreatment.
