STDs Rates are Climbing in California

According to recent data reported by The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), cases of sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in the state and continue to climb at alarming rates. This infographic illustrates the data from the latest 2018 findings from the CDPH.

2018 STD Case Numbers

  • Syphilis - 25,344 cases - up 265% from 2008
  • Gonorrhea - 79,397 cases - up 211% from 2008
  • Chlamydia - 232,181 cases - up 56% from 2008

The highest number of STD cases were among young people ages 15 - 24.

A Public Health Problem

Among both males and females, syphilis is a significant health problem and has increased in all regions of the state.

  • The greatest increase in syphilis was among women between 2008 and 2018
  • Syphilis cases among women increased by 743%
  • Syphilis cases among men increased by 268%

HPV and Cancer Risk

HPV can cause the following cancers:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Vulvar cancer
  • Anal cancer
  • Throat cancer

Between 2010 and 2014, California had roughly 10.9 cases of HPV per 1,000 persons.
